Napoleon of animal farm free essay sample

Animal Farm written by Orwell is a satire of communism. Throughout the book one can see the true effects that communism has on people, and not the covered up communism that is displayed to the world. One of the lead characters in animal farm is Napoleon. Napoleon is a Berkshire boar who eventually becomes the leader of the farm. Napoleon is also a representation of Josef Stalin. Through napoleons life one can see that true communism is cruel, inhuman, and capable of any dastardly deed. Napoleon is a cruel, conniving pig. Napoleon doesn’t play much of a role in the initial rebellion. After the dust settles he trains nine dogs (the KGB) to chase away his rival Snowball from power. Snowball was more popular than Napoleon so napoleon had to create a secret weapon to keep him in check. When the dogs return to him after they chased snowball off, â€Å"It was noticed that they wagged their tails to him in the same way as the other dogs had been used to do to Mr. We will write a custom essay sample on Napoleon of animal farm or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Jones. †(53)The dogs served as napoleons secret police eventually assassinating snowball. He sets himself up in a position that no one could touch. He â€Å"Spent all his time in the farmhouse, which was guarded at each door by fierce-looking dogs. †(55) As soon as he moves to power, it becomes clear that he has very little interest in Old Major’s prophecy. Napoleon doesn’t care if all animals are equal or if they control the means of production. Napoleon was a greedy pig that wanted more that he already had and he was willing to do almost anything to get more. When the harvest started to fail Napoleon decides to fill the granaries with sand to hide the smaller harvest. He did this to show how great his system worked, but Animal Farm’s productivity slumped off. We can see that napoleon was a cruel, conniving pig that would stop at nothing to get his way. Napoleon is inhuman to the other animals. Napoleon squashes the hen rebellion by cutting off their food rations, causing a number of hens to die of starvation. Then Napoleon demands that various animals come forward and make false confessions before the group. He gets rid of anyone contradicts him. After he reveals them as traitors, â€Å"the dogs promptly tore their throats out. In this way, Napoleon takes out the four pigs who sometimes disagreed with him, and the hens who acted as ringleaders in the rebellion. Napoleon, like Stalin, had a â€Å"Great Purge† discrediting and killing any that opposed him. â€Å"And so the tale of confessions and executions went on, until there was a pile of corpses lying before Napoleon’s feet and the air was heavy with the smell of blood, which had been unknown there since the time of Jones. †(84) Napoleon was capable of any dastardly deed. To make sure he is untouchable Napoleon would protects himself on all fronts. With the help of Squealer and the other pigs, he re-wrote history, turning Snowball into a villain, and increasing his own role in the Rebellion, without showing the truth behind the story. He used his political power to essentially re-write Russian history, giving himself a much larger role in the revolution than he had actually played. He relied on the stronger animals, like Boxer and Benjamin to influence the others. If anyone questioned him, he had sheep chant loudly over their protests. At the same time, napoleon kept tight control over the media. He made statues and paintings of himself so the children would have to see him. When he was questioned about disobeying his own rules he has Squealer explain that they were only doing it to, â€Å"Carry out our duties†. (67) Whether or not Napoleon’s the most intelligent pig on the farm, we know that he’s certainly the most cunning. By the end of the novel, Animal Farm is run according to Napoleon’s will. Through napoleons life one can see the true heart of communism and the effect that it has on millions of lives. By looking at Napoleons life one can see that true communism is cruel, inhuman, and capable of any dastardly deed.

Georgian Speekle - A Giant Isopod

Georgian Speekle - A Giant Isopod The Georgian speekle is the name given to a giant isopod that was found in the state of Georgia in the United States. Photos of the monstrous-looking creature went viral on the internet, leading to comments like Fake! and Photoshop. However, the animal really does exist and yes, it really is over a foot long. Is an Isopod a Bug? No, the Georgian speekle is not an insect or a bug. One defining characteristic of an insect is that it has six legs. The speekle has many more than six appendages. A bug, on the other hand, belongs to the order Hemiptera and mostly resembles an insect, except it has hardened wings and sucking and piercing mouthparts. The speekle is a type of isopod. Isopods dont have wings, nor do they bite like bugs. While insects, bugs, and isopods are all types of arthropods, they are in separate groups. An isopod is  a type of crustacean, related to crabs and lobsters. Its closest land relatives are pill bugs or the common woodlouse. Of the 20 or so species of isopods, the largest is the giant isopod Bathynomus giganteus. How Big Is the Giant Isopod? While B. giganteus is an example of marine gigantism, its not particularly huge. Its not on the order of, say, a giant squid. A typical isopod is around 5 centimeters long (about 2 inches). An adult B. giganteus can be 17 to 50 centimeters (6.7 to 19.7 inches) long. While thats large enough to look scary, the isopod doesnt pose a threat to people or pets. Giant Isopod Facts B. giganteus lives in deep water, off the coast of Georgia (USA) to Brazil in the Atlantic, including the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. Three other species of giant isopods are found in the Indo-Pacific, but none have been found in the East Pacific or East Atlantic. Because its habitat is largely unexplored, additional species may await discovery. Like other types of arthropods, isopods molt their chitin exoskeletons as they grow. They reproduce by laying eggs. Like other crustaceans, they have blue blood, which is really their circulatory fluid. The hemolymph is blue because it contains the copper-based pigment hemocyanin. Most photographs of isopods show them as gray or brown, but sometimes a sick animal appears blue. Although they look intimidating, isopods arent aggressive predators. Rather, they are opportunistic scavengers, mostly living on decaying organisms in the seas benthic zone. They have been observed eating carrion, as well as small fish and sponges. They use their four sets of jars to tear apart their food. Isopods have compound eyes that have over 4000 facets. Like cat eyes, isopod eyes feature a reflective layer at the back that reflects back light (the tapetum). This enhances their vision under dim conditions and also makes the eyes reflective if a light is shined on them. However, its dark in the depths, so isopods probably dont rely much on sight. Like shrimp, they use their antennae to explore their environment. The antennae house chemoreceptors which can be used to smell and taste molecules around them. Female isopods have a pouch called a marsupium that holds eggs until they are ready to hatch. Males have appendages called peenies and masculinae used transfer sperm to the female after she molts (when her shell is soft). Isopods have the largest eggs of any marine invertebrate, measuring about a centimeter or half an inch in length. Females bury themselves in sediment when they are brooding and stop eating. The eggs hatch into animals that look like their parents, except smaller and missing the last pair of legs. They gain the final appendages after they grow and molt. In addition to crawling along in the sediment, isopods are skillful swimmers. They can swim either right-side up or upside-down. Isopods in Captivity A few giant isopods have been kept in captivity. One specimen became famous because it wouldnt eat. This isopod appeared healthy, yet refused food for five years. It eventually died, but its unclear whether starvation is what killed it. Because isopods live on the sea floor, they can go a very long time before encountering a meal. Giant isopods at the Aquarium of the Pacific are fed dead mackerel. These isopods tend to eat four to ten times a year. When they eat, they gorge themselves to the point where they have trouble moving. Although the animals arent aggressive, they do bite. Handlers wear gloves when working with them. Like pillbugs, giant isopods curl up into a ball when threatened. This helps protective their vulnerable internal organs from attack. References Lowry, J. Choose a set of military images or objects and consider how they have Essay

Choose a set of military images or objects and consider how they have mobilized popular opinion in support of war - Essay Example Thesis statement: pictures especially of military objects mobilized popular opinion in support of war. This paper will discuss the role played by pictures in the outbreak and spread of the World War 1 and the Vietnam War. Experts believe that propaganda spread by the media then played a big role in the outbreak of the war (Dowling, 2006). The mass media played a great role in spreading pictures that were emotions and aggressive thus convincing the neutral nations that their sovereignty and peace was at risk (Allan, 2003). Many countries relied on propaganda pictures in scaring their enemies and demonstrating their military power. Cartoonists drew sarcastic pictures of their rivals thus contributing to anger among the citizens and agitations for the support of the War (Dowling, 2006). A majority of the pictures contained ill motive messages such as killing of women and children thus implying the intention to contravene the universal human rights of the civilians that were safeguarded by the international law. The agitated interest groups and emotional civilians could not withstand the provocative messages contained in the pictures and hence urged the governments to join the War in order to ensure national security (Allan, 2003). Pictures of women being raped by soldiers during war prompted feminist groups to urge the nation to join in the war while those containing images of burning property prompted the humanitarian groups to join urge the national governments to take military action against countries that breached civilian rights (Dowling, 2006). This was the height of propaganda since pictures portrayed the negativity of the war leading some countries to join the War in order to safeguard the innocent civilians (Allan, 2003). Accordingly, some pictures and images depicted an ongoing arms race since several countries were involved in military strengthening and manufacture of sophisticated weaponry. Countries like German and Britain were engaged in manufacturin g advanced war ships and battle tanks that could easily overpower the enemy (Dowling, 2006). The mass media fueled the popular opinion on War through showing the pictures of enemy weapons and analyzing how such weapons posed a great threat to their stability and security. Military weapons pictures contributed to War since several countries wanted to demonstrate their superiority and military strength through putting the advanced weapons in to action during the War (Dowling, 2006). The increased fear among the citizens led to agitation for surprise attacks on the enemies (Allan, 2003). The humanitarian crisis images and pictures taken in Vietnam also created a popular opinion towards the War since pictures showed images of crushing trains, burning airplanes, starving children. The pictures of death American soldiers and crushing planes made Americans believe that extreme military offensive through air strikes, naval strikes and additional soldiers was needed in Vietnam. The effects o f these devastating images prompted the entry of other states in order to end the costly War (Dowling, 2006). Recruiting Poster, World War I Pictured above was part of the posters used to urge nations to join in the First World War in the wake of its outbreak (Dowling, 2006). The picture shows a gorilla with fangs and a scary spiked Prussian helmet carrying off an American woman. The club has a label of â€Å"kultur†

Professionalism and ethics learning portfolio Essay - 1

Professionalism and ethics learning portfolio - Essay Example l issues in the legal profession: â€Å"First, do no harm.† In applying this adage to the legal profession, analysts point out that, in recent years, many lawyers have forgotten about their commitment to justice and the rule of law. At times that goes against the very tenets of legal success. While humility and sacrifice is valued in the medical field, it can be a career killer in legal circles. Maybe instead we could slip in â€Å"First do much harm† instead. That is not to say that all legal professionals are arrogant and self-serving, but legal practice often rewards these qualities nonetheless. Generally speaking, law is now guided by an established philosophical school: ethical egoism; that is, doing what is best for oneself is what is best for the world. Some practitioners and interest groups point out that there may be a need for a Hippocratic Oath for law graduates in order to ensure that illegal and unethical practices in the legal profession would be avoided. An analysis by Evans (n.d) reveals that implementing a Hippocratic Oath for lawyers may work well for the legal profession; however, it may also just remain an empty symbol because in essence, the legal profession is very much different from the medical practice. The medical profession, from the very beginning, incorporates and emphasizes among their students the importance of ‘first, doing no harm.’ Among law students and new lawyers however, the message is not transmitted and emphasized enough. Evans (n.d) also points out that the legal practice is filled with activities which circumvent the laws; these practices also often skate the thin line between the ethical and unethical. And yet, most lawyers are aware of this practice among their colleagues and given the same opportunity, would use such strategies too. With this premise in the legal practice, Evans (n.d) once again points out how, in the legal practice, â€Å"honesty is all very well, but how does honesty allow tax avoidance, but not

Politics and Government Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Politics and Government - Essay Example She can start her campaign from advertising on TVs and Radios. Although the costs may be very high for such campaign, but, since she needs to reach out to a vast audience, this type of campaign is necessary. Another reason why we should advertise on TV and Radios is that not all people can read newspapers because of low-literacy rate and since the governor needs to reach out to everyone, from the most learned to an ordinary man, who cannot read or write. Only mass-media like TV and Radio would help her to meet her target of reaching out to everyone in Alaska. Only advertising on mass media would make sure that everyone gets her message and this would make her campaign more efficient, even though it will be costly. Similarly, when she decided to run for the seat in the Senate, she can advertise her campaign on print media such as Newspapers and Pamphlets. The reason behind this is that in this scenario she would need not to reach out to the every single person of Alaska but only selected few. As a PR officer, we would first assess what kind of people we are targeting and then we can design and advertise the campaign accordingly. Similarly, since we do not need to reach out to everyone, we will not waste our money on mass media.

Lewin:- The introductory methods for managing change are as follows according Lewin 1951. Unfreezing, existing behaviour and attitudes are supported by changing the present state equilibrium. According to new information new responses can be developed. Refreezing, by introduction of new responses in to personality concern can stabilize change. Field force analysis is a methodology for analysing change suggested by lewin which involves Transition to the future state is affected by analysing driving or restraining forces Differentiating between driving and restraining forces is essential. Action should be taking to increase critical driving forces and decrease critical restraining forces (Martin, 2006) Value change analysis can be applied to an organization , every time cost is reduce value substitution should be implemented, through this organization and customers both gain this has been practiced by Pizza hut self service check outs have not only reduce the staff cost but it also has made shopping experience easier for the consumer. (Horovitz, 2004) Guideline for Change Management:- Armstrong has explained the following factors to make sure that change management is successfully implemented in an organization. Understanding of the organizational structure and levels of change needs to be affective with the help of a strong and visionary leadership. Appropriate attitude and leadership is required to those concerned at all levels when implementing change strategies. Encourage workers who accept the idea of change participation in planning and implementation. Change should be advocated with the help of hard evidence and data. Instead of attitudes or corporate culture change should be implemented by process and behaviours. This should be completed by awarding people who encourage change and challenges. (Armstrong, 2006) Trigger: There are two types of trigger are involved in this change Internal Trigger: The management of Pizza hut realized that the sale and services are going bad due to negligence of staff and the shortage of staff so they need to change something, after the consideration they recognized the technology which can provide better customer services. External Trigger: Every organization is brining change introducing different technologies so Pizza hut also needs to bring the change in the organization and change could be innovation and innovation could be technology, however Pizza hut adapted the computer technology to satisfy the customers. Recommendation:- Martin in 2006 suggested that it is the responsibility of the experienced co-worker to train and guide new staff this reflects the fact that organizational structure needs to change with the introduction of new technology, in return the workforce with look towards the management for training guidance. (Martin, 2006) Technology today improves the quality of life. It improves choice in foods, transportation, jobs, housing, healthcare, water quality and entertainment, further more. It is looked upon as a source of progression in most societies. (Henry Mayle, 2002) This new concept not only improves staff image but also helps to increase in customers. This would be communicated to the general public through the Ads, media, radio, television etc. My Recommendation:- We will recommend that pizza hut should have to improve this in future and provide more reliable online ordering system to the customers. Many products are not online pizza hut should have to provide such products online. In future pizza hut should have to expand this innovation in good manner. Conclusion:- Pizza hut is the biggest pizza company in the United Kingdom. It is the no.1 largest company in the world. It provides the quality of products and services. So pizza hut technology management introduced mobile text ordering, mobile portable card payment machines and online ordering. This innovation is very helpful and reliable for the customers, Before introducing innovation the technology management ensure that the innovation should be understandable and supported by the staff and the top management. However in the organization the staff must have training before using the mobile text ordering, mobile portable card payment machines and online ordering in the meanwhile this innovation is very beneficial and favourable for pizza hut. Pizza hut can gain and remain the sustainable competitive advantage.

The Importance of Recycling :: Environment Ecology Essays Papers

The Importance of Recycling Recycling is an important project everyone should be part of. If we do not recycle many landfills where we put garbage will be filled up faster and we will use more of our natural resources to make the products we could have made from recycled material. My entire life people have been standing over my shoulder making sure I am recycling everything possible. In high school we had huge recycling bins all over the entire school. Down every hall there was a regular garbage can, a garbage can for pop cans, and a bin for paper products and glass bottles. It was important to everyone that garbage was disposed of in the proper places. First of all we have all been taught that this was the appropriate thing to do and secondly out of common courtesy. We knew that our janitors would take the time to move cans and glass bottles from the wrong trash bins to the correct ones. I was a little surprised and disappointed with the recycling bins placed in my dorm, Patterson. There are three huge garbage cans and one tiny recycling bin. The bin is only large enough to hold about six cans or bottles. It does not promote recycling very well, not to mention that it is usually filled with new garbage bags used to replace the bags in the large garbage cans. So even if you want to recycle something there is no room. The book â€Å"Great Expectations† taught me to love the environment more. The characters in this book took great pride in caring for the gardens and the land around the house. The hired boy would work on the land a lot and it became like his home also. He and the people who lived in this house cared about the land and its appearance. They loved to go back there after they were grown and walk around. I believe everyone should take time to appreciate the environment around him or her and find the beauty in it. It is also everyone’s job to pitch in and take care of our environment to keep it beautiful.
